“An Unlikely Friend”

One of our hospice volunteers Barbara reached out to a homeless man Bill with whom she had an instant connection.  Over the course of 6 years, these two shared a close friendship… and a love for music.  Barbara helped Bill to secure housing, social security and health benefits in Ventura County, California.  Bill said many times, "I am the luckiest man on earth."  Bill shared many stories about his exciting but troubled past.  However in December 2013 Billy's health deteriorated tremendously and by early 2014 he was on hospice.  Barbara went from hospice volunteer to a dear friend's caregiver during Bill's final days .  Barbara trusted Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association clinicians to provide the exceptional care for Bill as they did for her own husband who died in 2007  Bill died on April 23, 2014 with his wishes honored...to die at home, comfortable and loved.
