In Came The Cadets

On Sunday, April 17, 2016, as part of collaboration between Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties and the U.S. Military Academy, Mr. Hughes received an Honor Salute from Cadets Collin Cooley, Class of 2019, and Bethany Russell, Class of 2017.

Walter Hughes, of Port Jervis, N.Y., an 82nd Airborne Division and WWII veteran, has been included in dozens of WWII historical accounting's, helping preserve stories about brave comrades who fought beside him from 1943-46 with the 504th Parachute Infantry, 82nd Airborne Division.

The Cadets shared stories with the former paratrooper and presented him with a beautiful patriotic quilt, a pin, a letter from a school student thanking him for his service to his Nation, as well as, a certificate of appreciation for his service from Hospice and class coins from each of the Cadets' classes.

Walter had been receiving hospice care at home for a number of months and was able to live his life on his own terms, right where he had for over 35 years all because of Hospice. After almost a year receiving hospice care, Mr. Hughes passed away in December 2016.

Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties is a level 3 We Honor Veterans Partner.
