A Day in the Mountains

A hospice patient from California moved to Utah and had three wishes.  He was limited due to finances and was being cared for by friends who found him dying in California, brought him to Utah and took him in.  His three wishes were that his wife and child could join him in Utah,  and that when he died he could be buried at home in Mexico and he wanted to go to the mountains and see the snow.

The family he was staying with coordinated with their church to bring his wife and daughter to Utah and the family brought them into their home as they cared for the patient.

The Encompass Hospice Cares foundation provided a grant to assist with cremation and the costs of returning to Mexico.

The Encompass Cares foundation, Snow Basin Adaptive Sports Education Foundation and numerous volunteers coordinated to provide a day on the mountain skiing for the patient and the family.

This was a new experience for the patient and his family as well as the host family and their children who had never been in the mountains.  Ski lessons were provided by Snow Basin, as well as a gondola ride and lunch at a mountain top restaurant.

This was a rewarding experience for all involved both the patient, his family and friends and for the 11 volunteers who helped arrange support and participate in this activity.

All three wishes were granted and a patient and his family gained experiences that will last a lifetime.
