For the First Time...Touching Sand, Feeling the Ocean

On a recent home visit, a young mom told her son's pediatric hospice nurse and hospice social worker that she really wanted her two-year-old son, Matthias, to touch the sand and feel the ocean at least once in his life.

Although New York City is full of waterways, she confided that getting to the beach was a logistical challenge for her family.

The MJHS pediatric hospice team loves to create instant positive experiences for young patients and lasting memories for their loved ones. Drawing on the mission of the MJHS Build a Memory program, Matthias’ hospice care team created ‘Beach Day’, which included round trip car service for the family, fun beach toys for Matthias' older brother, sunscreen and a professional photographer…so the family will always be able to remember that special day.
