A Mermaid-Themed Blanket for a Former Mermaid

When Ann Blanchard was 16 years old, she was a mermaid at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, in Weeki Wachee, Florida. After working at Weeki Wachee, Ann went on to become a hospital auxillary volunteer at a Tampa hospital for 45 years and served five years as the president of that organization. She also helped start the Friendship Club in the Tampa area, a local club for women who were newcomers to the area.

Recently, Ann was happily reunited with her days at the Weeki Wachee in the form of a mermaid-themed activity blanket custom made by Haven Hospice Volunteer Karen Murphy. Karen shares her sewing talents with Haven Hospice patients and families in the Jacksonville area by creating memory bears and activity blankets. She also makes cloth carrots which are specifically designed for individuals with multiple sclerosis. Since joining the volunteer team at Haven Hospice three years ago, Karen has been bringing joy to patients with her sewing talents and assisting in community outreach efforts at special events.

Karen, a retired civil engineer, goes on to say “I think we all have to help each other. It is important to help other people whenever you can.”
