What does Football have to do with Hospice?

When people think of hospice, they don’t think of football. However, many hospice patients are die-hard sports fans. When football teams and hospice providers work together, the end result is a happy patient! Before you sit down to tune into this year’s Super Bowl, check out a few examples of how hospices scored a touchdown in patient care this year.

“A Lifelong Fan”

Dreams do come true; just ask Brian Albin.

The Owensboro resident took a trip to watch an NFL game. An event he called, “the trip of a lifetime” to see his beloved San Francisco 49ers play in person at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, MO. Diagnosed with Huntington's Disease, Brian, 41, elected care from Hospice of Western Kentucky to help him with the journey, but nothing has helped him more than his love of football and the 49ers.

He has followed the team since the 80s and an entire room in his home is dedicated to the 49ers with memorabilia he has collected through the years. He says the team helps raise his spirits and provides a welcome distraction when he needs it most.

His dream was to have the opportunity to not only see a game in person, but to meet the coaches and players to personally thank them for the joy they have brought him on game days. With the help of dreamfoundation.org, that wish was fulfilled!

Brian was accompanied on the trip by his significant Kim Payne, his father, half sister and nephew. When asked if it was one of the happiest days of his life, Brian's response was a definite "yes"! What made the day even better was his 49ers won!

A Harbor Hospice patient is joined by her family to thank the local football team for building her a wheelchair ramp for easy access to her family’s home. Our community is wonderful and makes moments like these happen throughout the year.  A moment made and shared by many!

Here is a Harrison's Hope patient who wanted to meet some local Boise State Broncos before she wouldn't be well enough to. Hospice made this happen!
